The sweet gray bunny named Harriet came to the OHRR Adoption Center in July. She was brought in by a Good Samaritan who had found her running loose and couldn’t keep her any longer. Harriet was very lucky to have made her way to OHRR, otherwise, she might not be alive today.
Every rabbit that comes under the care of OHRR is spayed or neutered. These medical procedures make up much of our veterinary expenses. Each bunny is healthier, better behaved, and less territorial after their procedure. Plus, we know for sure there won’t be any future baby bunnies!
It is imperative that female bunnies be spayed for another important reason: they are likely to develop reproductive system cancer if not spayed. When Harriet went in for her routine spay procedure, a uterine mass was found on her left side and was removed as a part of the spay.
The pathology report revealed well-differentiated endometrial carcinoma. This type of cancer starts in the lining of the uterus (endometrium). The cancer cells found looked somewhat similar to normal cells, suggesting an early stage, less aggressive form of uterine cancer – and a better prognosis! As a follow-up, Harriet had a lung x-ray, since the lungs are easy to check, and are an area where the cancer is likely to spread.
Thankfully, Harriet’s lung x-ray showed no signs of cancer. She was ready to be adopted to a knowledgeable bunny parent who could watch for the sometimes subtle signs of cancer, if it were to return.
Bunderful news: Harriet has recently been adopted! She found an experienced bunny mom and dad who will care for her with unconditional love and monitor her health and happiness!
By giving to the OHRR Vet Care Fund, you help us care for more than 125 rabbits who come into our rescue every year – and assure that they are spayed or neutered. All OHRR bunnies also receive an RHDV2 vaccination.
Your contribution will be matched 1:1 by four generous OHRR donors.
The bunnies thank you for your support!
We have recently created the OHRR Legacy Fund, so we can continue to give bunnies a bright future for years to come. By designating OHRR as part of your trust, will, or estate, or making a calendar year donation of $1000 or more (including donations to the Vet Care Fund), you will become a member of our Rescue Rabbit Guardians group.
